Bradley University President Joanne Glasser finds out she's an epeeist at the Activities Fair. | On Monday, August 26th, we once again sat at our booth at Bradley's Activities Fair. With 500 snappy business cards, a bucket of candy, and a cooler full of freeze-pops for the hot day, we were ready to recruit for our 2013-2014 year. One information meeting, a s'mores cookout, armory party, and nine practices later, our club has drastically changed from last year. Our practices have gotten larger. Instead of having around 15 members with about 8 showing up nightly for practice, we have closer to 30 members with about 20 people a night coming to practice. In fact, we've outgrown out space in multiple ways: we need another closet for gear, and a larger practice space for our club. We have more coaching available to us. Two years ago, we only had Theresa and Keegan volunteering their time. Between their continued help, our partnership with PFA, and Marc and Brian donating their time, we have enough people to ensure all of our members get attention to help them improve. On top of these increases, we decided to take the plunge and fully participate in the Midwest Fencing Conference this year. Those of us who attended the USACFC last year wanted to remain active through collegiate tournaments in addition to USA Fencing tournaments. Last year, when |
we attended USACFC at Michigan State, we only brought women's epee, women's foil, and men's epee. This year, for MFCs, we have full men's teams, full women's sabre, and only need one more member for women's epee or foil. While we still continue to support and teach recreational fencers, there is a new competitive focus at our club which is awesome to see.
All in all, this year has started to show the growth and transformation Bradley Fencing has gone through over the past couple of years. It's going to be a great season for us, and I can't wait to see where the direction takes us.
